The Coalition for Online Data Empowerment

CODE is the voice for organisations that are helping people take control of their personal data online.

About CODE

We are the trade association for organisations that are helping people take control of their personal data online.

Who do we represent?

Our members enable better consumers outcomes with respect to personal data, including by assisting with access, storage, control and consent management, understanding and insights, and sharing in its value.

Why are we needed?

Our members are all innovators, attempting to unlock new value and growth within the emerging personal data economy, while shifting the balance of power in online ecosystems from global corporations to people. But their full potential cannot be realised until bold and meaningful regulatory change is delivered by governments and regulators around the world. In order to address this, CODE will be advocating on behalf of its members for more effective data portability rights and tools, a better deal for consumers online, and a level playing field in digital markets.

Who are we?

CODE is led by Tom Fish, our Director of Policy. Tom is also Head of Public Policy and Research for Gener8, our founding member and primary source of funding in this first phase of our journey.

Where are we?

We are based in the UK, and our initial focus will predominantly be targeted towards policy in the UK and EU. But digital markets are global in nature, so new members are welcome from anywhere in the world so long as they are aligned with our values.

Our members

Our members are predominantly small businesses, with some understandably preferring to keep their involvement confidential. Below are some of the organisations that we represent.

Whatever your preferred level of involvement, we'll make sure your voice is heard, and that you are kept up-to-date with the latest developments.
