Gatekeeper Data Portability APIs

At CODE, our members have connected to the various Data Portability APIs that the Digital Markets Act-designated gatekeepers have implemented to comply with Article 6(9). The gatekeepers, Alphabet (Google), Amazon, Apple, ByteDance (TikTok), Booking, Meta, and Microsoft (LinkedIn), have all created data portability solutions, with the intention of providing "end users and third parties authorised by an end user, at their request and free of charge, with effective portability of data provided by the end user or generated through the activity of the end user in the context of the use of the relevant core platform service, including by providing, free of charge, tools to facilitate the effective exercise of such data portability, and including by the provision of continuous and real-time access to such data."

Here, based on aggregated feedback from our members, we provide traffic lights on how these portability solutions are working, based on verification procedure, consent flow, communication, data quality and technical usability. We have left out two gatekeepers due to lack of feedback data, but we hope to add them soon. If you would like to contribute feedback, get in touch

Google Data Portability API

Google's Data Portability API allows users to share a copy of their data with a third party. The user actively selects what data they wish to share and for how long. This can be a one time transfer or grant regular access on a 30 or 180 day basis.

Users are prompted to share data when accessing a third party app which has been verified by Google.

Amazon

Amazon Data Portability API

Amazon Data Portability API offers authorized third parties the capability to programmatically import Amazon customers' data to an app or website after the customers give authorization through Login With Amazon (LWA).

Amazon Data Portability API ports customer-selected Data Portability Scopes.

This can be done as a one-time transfer, 30 days, 90 days, 180 days, or 1 year.

Users can select custom date ranges, from the past 5 days or a custom date.

ByteDance

TikTok Data Portability API

Bytedance’s designated core platform service, TikTok, offers both a "Download Your Data"  tool for user-initiated downloads and a Data Portability API. Through the API, users are able to authorise a developer to make single or recurring data portability requests. Users can export a full archive or specific categories of data, such as posts, profile, activity and direct messages.

Meta

Meta's Export Your Information

Meta previously offered two portability solutions. Download Your Information (DYI) for single downloads and Transfer Your Information (TYI) to directly transfer a copy of a user's data, "such as photos, videos or posts to a variety of destinations such as Google Photos, Dropbox, and Koofr.”

As of 2025, Meta has combined these two tools into Export Your Information (EYI), allowing for daily data transfers. Users choose from a list of third-party destinations and can select what data scopes to transfer.

Microsoft

LinkedIn Data Portability API

LinkedIn's Member Data Portability product provides APIs to third-party developers to port a LinkedIn member's data with their consent. This allows users to port a member's posts, comments, reactions, and other account data.
